First keep the performance, then the price

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

I understand that as days go by, people or at least governments start to order more and more XO laptops. It is good, but I have started to wonder, after reading a post on RuggedNotebooksBlog.com about market being invaded with cheap rugged laptops in the future, if this is going to happen or not. I think that there will always be a good market for regular laptops, for rugged laptops as well for those cheap ones that for sure will not offer high performances for the price.

I don’t want to say anything against XO or OLPC, the initiative is great and it will help a lot of people (children) learning computers and stuff, but I don’t think that producing cheap laptops on large scale is an answer. We need performance to go on, we need speed, we need power for our processors  and these cost money.

Well, don’t get me wrong, I think that getting the price down will be good, since I always love to not spend very much for a product, whatever that is, but ok, let’s cut the price down to how much we afford without losing  facilities or performance.

This is my opinion. Rugged laptops need strong shells, good displays that withstand bumps, hits, components that are stronger than regular ones. All these cost money. Let’s keep it up with performance. If we could also cut the price down at least a bit, it will be great also.

Powermonkey eXplorer kit, a handy friend

powermonkey explorer kit, rugged solar chargerI have just posted an article about this in the rugged gadgets section on the site, but I could not stop thinking how handy such a product comes. It is easy to forget to recharge your mobile and on the road it may be vital to have your mobile with you, fully charged. I use to go on the mountains from time to time and while there, my mobile battery dies.

Well, now I can only think that such a device, Powermonkey eXplorer kit would be really a bless out there.

I have read about it here a few minutes ago and my initial impression was “what a great gadget”. Then I have seen the specifications on EarthTechProducts.com and my impression became a conviction: this is the gadget you really need when going out on places where you don’t have access to sockets.

All the rest are just useless compared to it.

wearable displayWhen I have seen www.argoncorp.com website on the internet, I was curious to see what they do.

Well, they do a lot but first of all they produce military display systems, rugged displays to be used in all kind of impossible situations, mostly by army.

For ex, Wearable Display, or 8.4″ Helicopter Mounted Display and the list is long.

As they say,

Our rugged computers and flat-panel displays provide the dependable performance, proven reliability and quality construction required by military and commercial avionics applications. They allow designers to rapidly meet performance, cost, and schedule objectives. These displays and computers meet DoD definitions for non-development items (NDI) and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment.

The activity of Argocomp is oriented to production of rugged systems for military usage and they have sales representatives on North America, Europe and Middle East.
